Auburn Fire and Rescue Junior Firefighter Academy
Evening summer camp program for rising sixth, seventh and eighth graders going into Auburn Junior High School
Auburn Fire and Rescue invites Auburn Junior High School youth interested in learning what it takes to be a firefighter to sign up for a free week-long evening academy. The Junior Firefighter Academy, which is for students entering sixth, seventh or eighth grade in August 2017, will be held Monday, July 17 through Friday, July 21. This academy is offered free of charge, due to a generous donation from Steve O’Dell of American Family Insurance.
Those attending the Junior Firefighter Academy will have the opportunity to experience the different aspects of being a firefighter. From firefighting to CPR, the junior firefighters will have an unforgettable educational experience. There are portions of the class that require physical effort in simulated firefighting operations as well as classroom training in fire safety and prevention. Students are required to participate in physical training exercises, which include push-ups, sit-ups, running and other physical activities. Due to the importance of these subjects, training is taken very seriously! If a junior firefighter acts out of line or is disrespectful, some forms of punishment that may consist of push ups, running extra laps and or writing what they did wrong several times and how they won’t do it again.
The Junior Firefighter Academy program is an outstanding way for our community’s students to learn what it is like to be a firefighter, and about all the many services our firefighters provide each and every day. Auburn Fire and Rescue takes great pride in our education and outreach efforts, and this program is a fantastic way to engage with the youth.
The Junior Firefighter Academy program will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Auburn Fire Station #2, at 117 West Jackson St., Auburn. Training starts at 6 pm. Participants can be dropped off at the firehouse in between 5:30 pm and 6:00 pm. Participants can be picked up no earlier than 8:30 pm and no later than 9 pm.
